Currently, Dawn Watkins is the Executive Director for WISH – The Women’s Crisis Center in Southern Humboldt – a small community-based organization in its 21st year of serving the women and families in the remote, frontier area of Southern Humboldt County. She serves on the Board of the Humboldt County Domestic Violence Coordinating Council and is the Far North Region Co-Chair for the Public Policy Research Committee for the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence. She currently works to co-coordinate the HUD Point-In-Time Homelessness count for Southern Humboldt County and is a member of the Humboldt Housing and Homelessness Coalition. Before working with WISH, Ms. Watkins was the Programs Director for Humboldt Domestic Violence Services and served as a trainer for the Transforming Communities Technical Assistance and Training Project, working with victims of domestic violence who have physical disabilities.
Before moving to California, Ms. Watkins co-founded the Alternative Healthcare Access Campaign which is an all-volunteer-run organization providing on-site alternative health care to Seattle’s homeless.
She is inspired by the work of Zainab Salbi, Ella Baker and Paul Farmer, but mostly by the women everywhere …every day who survive and work to end the violence against them . She lives in Ferndale, California with her son and her partner and his two sons. She enjoys stock car racing, her 1976 KZ400, fishing, playing cello… and lots of other things she can never make enough time to do.
